Both comfy and sporty, the 2019 Ford Edge and Jeep Grand Cherokee are two family-friendly midsize crossovers with a kick. Which should you choose? Our comparison guide takes a closer look at these popular crossovers to help you decide.
Comfort and Practicality
Comfort and Practicality: 2019 Ford Edge
The Edge is great at commuting, family hauling, and vacationing. Why? For starters, the Edge is the crossover with the most welcoming cabin. Passenger space is generous in both rows, making this Ford crossover ideal for family travel.
Then there’s the cargo space, which gives you the ability to pack more sports gear and a bigger suitcase. Behind the rear seats, the Edge offers 39.2 cubes of cargo space to the Grand Cherokee’s 36.3 feet. The Edge also gives you more maximum capacity (73.4 cubes versus 68.3 cubes in the Grand Cherokee) for more leeway when it’s time to visit the furniture store.
The Grand Cherokee may not be quite as big as the Edge, but this Jeep does provide hours of driving comfort with its supportive seats and quick-cooling climate controls. If you opt for the heated seats, however, you may find yourself wishing they were a bit warmer.
Smoothest Cruiser
Smoothest Cruiser: 2019 Ford Edge
We all want to smooth over the bumps in the road and keep road noise outside the cabin where it belongs. The Edge does exactly that, making it our first choice for your daily commute. Besides ride comfort, you’ll find secure handling and sharp steering. On the road, the Edge is the total package.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is also a quiet cruiser, keeping road and engine noise at bay for a seriously serene road trip. But ride quality isn’t quite as smooth; you’ll wish the suspension did a better job of soaking up broken pavement.
Biggest Off-Road Chops
Biggest Off-Road Chops: 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Of all the models in the midsize crossover segment, the Grand Cherokee has the most off-road potential. Its optional four-wheel drive system happily takes you into the wilderness. And there’s even a specialty model, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, which comes standard with all the rugged gear (off-road tires, increased suspension travel) that your adventures require.
If you need a little extra traction from the Edge, you can add all-wheel drive to any trim model. This performance gear gets you down light trails and keep you stable on icy pavement. However, though the Edge is definitely sporty and capable, it does its best work on the pavement.
Save More on Fuel
Save More on Fuel: 2019 Ford Edge
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is plenty rugged, but the 2019 Ford Edge outdoes the competition. If you’re after that comfortable, smooth-riding, thrifty life, the Edge is your crossover.
