14th-Generation Used F-150: 2021-Current Model Year

Ford is always thinking up ways to improve its best selling truck. For this generation, the F-150 rolls out a new hybrid powertrain, creating a ride that’s both powerful and more efficient than ever. These redesigned trucks also introduce a new infotainment system, SYNC 4, which includes an optional 12-inch touchscreen and new wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new Pro Power Onboard station, which basically functions as an onboard generator, can light up your campsite or charge your power tools.

The engine lineup from this generation includes:

  • 3.3-liter V6 (290 horsepower, 265 lb-ft of torque)
  • Turbocharged 2.7L V6 (325 hp, 400 lb-ft0
  • 5.0L V8 (400 hp, 410 lb-ft)
  • Turbo 3.0L diesel V6 (250 hp, 440 lb-ft)
  • Turbo 3.5L V6 (400 hp, 500 lb-ft)
  • High-output turbo 3.5L V6 (450 hp, 510 lb-ft) (Raptor trucks only)
  • Supercharged 5.2L V8 (700 hp, 640 lb-ft) (Raptor R trucks only)
  • PowerBoost hybrid turbo 3.5L V6 (430 hp, 570 lb-ft)

Ford has issues a few changes to these used F-150s from model year to model year:

  • 2023: The Raptor R, a supercharged version of Ford’s off-road-ready F-150, debuts. Shoppers can add the new off-road Rattler package to the base XL model, creating a trail-friendly truck at a great price.
  • 2022: Ford discontinues the 3.0-liter diesel engine. Shoppers can add a Black Appearance package to select trim models.

13th-Generation Used F-150: 2015-2020

These trucks revolutionized the game with their aluminum exterior panels. These lightweight materials not only made the F-150 more capable, but they also lent themselves to greater agility and fuel economy.

You’ll find plenty of power on tap, too, with five sturdy engines floating around the used market:

  • 3.5-liter V6 (283 horsepower, 255 lb-ft of torque)
  • Turbocharged 2.7L V6 (325 hp, 375 lb-ft)
  • 5.0L V8 (385 hp, 387 lb-ft)
  • Turbo 3.5L V6 (365 hp, 420 lb-ft)
  • Turbo 3.0L diesel V6 (250 hp, 440 lb-ft) (2019 and later)

Here’s a look at how these trucks changed from year to year:

  • 2020: Advanced driving aids become more widely available, with packages standard for the Lariat and up. The 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot is now standard. Shoppers can add new appearance packages to the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims.
  • 2019: Ford introduces a new 3.0-liter diesel V6. And the high-output version of the 3.5-liter V6 is now standard for both the Raptor and Limited trim models. These trims also feature a 36-gallon gas tank. Forward collision mitigation becomes standard equipment.
  • 2018: These F-150s introduce new engines that are both more powerful and more efficient. The 10-speed automatic transmission is now more widely available; you’ll find it paired with every engine but the standard V6.
  • 2017: This was a big year for the F-150. Its turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine got a new 10-speed automatic transmission, improving fuel economy and delivering more power than ever. The rugged Raptor also returns, packing a high-output version of the aforementioned turbo V6.
  • 2016: The SYNC 3 infotainment system replaces the MyFord Touch infotainment system. The new Pro Trailer Backup Assist system helps you back a trailer in the desired direction. The top-tier Limited trim model rejoins the lineup.

12th-Generation Used F-150: 2009-2014

When you’re browsing this collection of used light-duty trucks, you’ll find nine trim models: the entry-level XL, sporty STX, mid-level XLT, off-road-friendly FX2 and FX4, upscale Lariat, Western-themed King Ranch, plush Platinum, and top-of-the-line Limited.

At the outset, there were three optional engines: the standard 3.7-liter V6, powerful 5.0-liter V8, and a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. All send power to the wheels via a six-speed automatic. From the 2011 model year on, the F-150 offered more powerful engine options: the 4.6-liter V8, a higher-output version of this V8, and a 5.4-liter V8.

Here’s a look at the important changes that occurred during this generation:

  • 2013: The Harley Davidson trim model is discontinued, and the luxurious Limited is introduced. New features include the MyFord Touch infotainment system, Sync voice controls, hill descent control, and xenon headlights.
  • 2012: Four-wheel-drive trucks with the turbocharged V6 now come standard with a 36-gallon fuel tank. And four-wheel-drive trucks now have neutral tow capability, making it possible to flat-tow an F-150 behind a motorhome. AppLink smartphone connectivity debuts.
  • 2011: The F-150 gets a new engine lineup and a new Lariat trim model. The SVT Raptor trim is now available with the SuperCrew cabin.
  • 2010: The Harley Davidson trim model rejoins the lineup, and the rugged SVT Raptor debuts.
