Choosing between the 2020 Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator doesn’t have to be difficult. Once you get to know these midsize trucks a little better, it’s easy to tell which one is right for you. Our comparison guide is here to help you on your way.
Save Big: 2020 Ford Ranger
Just by choosing the Ranger, you can save thousands of dollars. Ford’s midsize truck starts at just $24,110. That makes it a steal, especially compared to the Gladiator, whose hefty MSRP starts at $33,545.
More for Your Money: 2020 Ford Ranger
The Ranger will definitely save you a lot of money, but does not that mean you won’t enjoy all the modern amenities the segment has to offer. This Ford pickup comes standard with high-tech conveniences (Wi-Fi, automatic emergency braking) and impressive comfort (supportive seating, roomy cabin options). Even the Ranger’s top trim model, the Lariat, which comes fully loaded with everything from leather upholstery to LED headlights, still saves you money. And the Lariat still costs less than the Gladiator’s entry-level model, with an MSRP of $32,500.
When you consider the Gladiator’s price tag, you might think that this Jeep pickup gives you a lot of extras. Unfortunately, though, its standard features lineup is pretty basic, with crank windows and manual door locks—things you don’t typically see on such a pricey vehicle. Of course, you can always add extras like power accessories and heated mirrors, but these features will end up costing even more.
Tow-Friendly Performance: It’s a Tie!
When it comes to actual tow ratings, the Gladiator is slightly more capable, towing max loads of 7,650 pounds to the Ranger’s 7,500 pounds. But, when you’ve got a boat or small camper that needs a lift, both the 2020 Ford Ranger and the Jeep Gladiator do an excellent job of transporting heavy weight. Both trucks offer optional tow packages, so you can upgrade your ride accordingly.
Off-Roading Qualifications: 2020 Jeep Gladiator
The Jeep Gladiator was specially designed for rugged adventure. If you’re planning to take your new truck into the wild West, on some mountainous road trips, or fording streams and muddy river beds, the Gladiator has everything you need to avoid getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. For optimal performance, the Gladiator Rubicon is your best bet. This model includes increased ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and a specula transfer case whose lower crawl ratio adds to the Rubicon’s excellent climbing and crawling performance.
The 2020 Ford Ranger offers two off-roading packages, one for its rear-wheel-drive models (FX2) and one for its four-wheel drive models (FX4). Add these packages to any trim level to create a go-anywhere pickup that can handle rugged trails with the best of them. And while the Ranger might not be able to scale as steep a mountain as the Gladiator can handle, it’s still a respectable off-road warrior.
There’s a lot to love about the new Jeep Gladiator, but it’s the 2020 Ford Ranger that gives you the best deal on a sporty midsize truck. You don’t have to take our word for it, though.
