At first glance, the 2021 Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado seem to have everything in common. And that’s exactly why it’s so hard to choose between these midsize trucks. But we’re here to help. Check out our comparison guide for a closer look at each pickup.
Best Starting Price: 2021 Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger gives you the better deal on a midsize truck, with an MSRP range of $24,820 to $36,610. The Chevy Colorado costs more, whether you start at the entry-level trim model or the most luxurious one, starting at $27,100 and capping off at $43,200.
Modern Cruising: 2021 Chevrolet Colorado
The Colorado comes with a few extra tech features, giving it the edge for modern cruising. For example, every trim model includes an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen. You also get complete smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
While the Ford Ranger also offers a smartphone-friendly infotainment interface, with an 8-inch touch screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, it’s not standard equipment. To enjoy these features, you can add the101A package to the base Ranger XL trim model, or you can upgrade to the mid-grade XLT and higher.
Off-Road Options: 2021 Ford Ranger
The Ranger offers more in the way of off-road packages, and you can equip any trim model for rugged adventure. For example, you can add either the FX2 (designed for rear-wheel-drive models) or the FX4 (designed for four-wheel-drive models) packages to your Ranger, which add off-road-ready suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and tow hooks. The Tremor Off-Road package is new for 2021, and it creates an increasingly rugged performance with upgraded suspension, an electronically locking rear differential, six auxiliary power switches, and more.
The Chevrolet Colorado doesn’t let you improve any old trim model up with an off-road package. You can, however, choose from two off-road-ready Colorado trim models, the Z71 and ZR2. The Z71 adds all-terrain tires, off-road-ready-suspension, and a locking rear differential for impressive trail performance. The ZR2 is even better equipped, adding a more powerful V6 engine, raised suspension, and bigger all-terrain tires.
On-Road Efficiency: It’s a Tie!
Both the 2021 Ford Ranger and the Chevrolet Colorado can deliver up to 23 mpg combined! You should note, however, that EPA ratings vary according to powertrain and body style. The Colorado earns its best EPA ratings with the optional turbodiesel engine, which of course will cost you extra. The Ranger delivers this fuel-sipping performance at no extra cost, using its standard engine and rear-wheel drive.
Endnotes
The Colorado might come with a few extra standard features, but the 2021 Ford Ranger gives you a lot more options. If you want the best deal on a midsize truck, the Ranger should be your first choice. You can also choose from a wider array of off-road options, which means that more drivers can go home in an adventure-ready truck.
