The upcoming 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevy Silverado EV are going to change the way we think about modern trucking. These battery-powered pickup trucks deliver incredible capabilities, and they’re totally gas-free. Which should you choose? Let’s take a closer look at each EV truck.
Modern Luxury: 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
With the F-150 Lightning, shoppers can choose between four trim models: the base model, mid-grade XLT, upscale Lariat, and top-of-the-line Platinum. With such a wide range, this EV truck lets drivers balance how much they want to spend with the amount of luxury they crave.
So far, Chevrolet has only announced one Silverado EV model: the base WT or Work Truck. It’s going to be great for fleet operators, but maybe not the best option for everyday driving, with minimal comfort features available. However, although this truck probably won’t offer leather upholstery and heated seats, it does provide a lot of the tech features that are available to the F-150 Lightning, including hands-free driving technology.
Max Towing: 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
Ready to tow a huge boat or camper? So is the F-150 Lightning, with a maximum tow rating of 10,000 pounds, available with the extended-range battery pack. With the standard-range battery, the F-150 Lightning can haul payloads of up to 2,000 pounds.
According to Chevrolet, the upcoming 2023 Silverado EV Work Truck will be able to tow 8,000 pounds. The automaker says that one day in the future, there will also be a version of the Silverado EV truck that can tow up to 20,000, providing what is essentially a heavy-duty version of the electric truck. We just don’t know when that day will be.
Battery Range: 2024 Chevy Silverado EV
According to Chevrolet, the Silverado EV will have a driving range of 400 miles between charges. That’s an incredible figure, and we look forward to learning more about this electric truck’s powertrain.
With the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, you can choose between two batteries, standard and extended-range. The EPA hasn’t rated the F-150 Lightning yet. However, Ford says the standard battery will provide 230 miles of range, and the extended-range battery boosts that figure to 300 miles.
Availability: 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
Currently available for pre-order, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is scheduled for delivery beginning this spring. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, on the other hand, isn’t set for its big debut until spring 2023. And even then, the Silverado EV will only be available in the basic Work Truck trim level, which is a great option for fleets but not so great for a modern, comfortable drive.
Your New EV Truck
The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV sounds like it’s going to be very impressive, but the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has more to offer, including luxury features and a much nearer delivery date.
